Teaching Proposal and Methodology

It is not just by looking inward that we find references to update and improve our work. To formulate the pedagogical project we follow today, our team sought out the most innovative and consistent teaching methodologies in the world through courses, immersions, and trips. One of these is STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math—, an approach that integrates multiple areas of knowledge with technology and the arts, allowing students to be more comprehensively prepared for the development of their skills and abilities. At Dante, it was included with the addition of the Humanities—represented by the letter S, for social, at the end: STEAM-S.

Reggio Emilia, in Italy, stands out for its approach that emphasizes social collaboration and recognizing the potential of each individual from early childhood onwards through listening, dialogue, and valuing experiences as a means of learning.

The Finnish model of education also serves as an inspiration for us: values such as the transversality of knowledge, considering socio-emotional skills as essential throughout an individual’s education, and the importance of student protagonism and initiative, always respecting each person’s individuality, also guide our practices.

INSPIRED BY THESE WAYS OF TEACHING AND CONSIDERING COLLABORATION, COMMUNICATION, CREATIVITY, AND CRITICAL THINKING AS KEY COMPETENCIES THAT MUST BE DEVELOPED AND STIMULATED THROUGHOUT THE TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESS, WE HAVE CREATED OUR DANTE WAY OF TEACHING.

If students are the protagonists of their learning process, it is essential that the school provides them with adequate support, in an attractive way, so that they can make their own choices along the way.

The Dante Mobile program, which is now fully integrated into the daily culture of the school (and which has earned us the title of Apple Distinguished Program), consists of accessing and sharing content on individual iPads that students have at their disposal—full digital citizenship depends on autonomy that can only come about through the conscious exploitation of the resources offered by these devices.

We also use techniques such as the flipped classroom, in which classes access video lessons and other types of content at home in order to carry out tasks, debates, and other activities on a given topic in the classroom; and we have maker spaces, such as the Creativity Space and Fab Dante, in which “hands-on” work broadens horizons and deepens knowledge through prototyping and digital manufacture, ensuring a more fertile environment for the consolidation of PBL (Project-Based Learning).

In all of these processes, the teacher is a mediator who doesn’t have all the knowledge and doesn’t always provide answers, but who guides the students, using the tools and content they have mastered, so that they can search for more information, as well as formulate new questions and problem-solving strategies.

In this context, technology is an everyday language for us. Our school is a pioneer in investments in this area: equipped with modern laboratories and devices that are renewed whenever necessary, Dante is also concerned with the conscious use of these resources. We encourage students to explore this menu of possibilities, always considering beforehand the real benefits of using each tool in each learning situation.
